Description

The precinct wall, dating from the 12th century, is located to the south and east of the Shire Hall in Bury St Edmunds. This wall is an interrupted stretch made of flint, with some sections being coursed and others random. At the western end, about 9 meters of the wall are at a higher level and partially form the rear wall of St Margaret's, continuing the section that runs through that building. The lower parts of this section are in good coursed flint. The remaining wall stretches approximately 78 meters in total length and consists of three sections, mostly made of coursed flint and standing about 3 meters high. It is interrupted by a short section of 20th-century brick replacement, a later archway, and a narrow roadway. Some parts of the wall have been extensively restored.
