Description
The precinct wall to the north of the former Abbey of St Edmund is a Grade I listed structure located along the south side of Mustow Street in Bury St Edmunds. This high wall, measuring 80 metres in length, dates back to the 12th century. It is constructed of flint, with much of it coursed and some sections knapped, and is divided into nine bays by stepped ashlar-faced buttresses.
At the eastern end, rough irregular flintwork indicates the former position of the East Gate, which was removed in 1760. The western end features two taller buttresses flanking a 3-metre area of coursed flint and stone, where a blocked window is visible on the upper face, showcasing chamfered stone jambs. The wide inner splay of this window can be observed from the inner side of the wall. The structure is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
