Description

The Drinking Trough, located on Eastgate Street in Bury St Edmunds, is a disused granite trough built in 1875. It is positioned in the open area at the front of The Broadway. The main horse trough is a simple rectangular stone basin, supported at each end by plain stone blocks. Below this basin, there is a shallow trough set at ground level. The front of the trough features the inscription 'BE MERCIFUL TO MAN AND BEAST' carved in large letters. A metal plate on the side states 'Presented to this Borough by Lady Bunbury Novr 1875'. On the outer side to the left, there is a small basin, although the metal fittings and tap are missing.
