Description
The Broadway is a house located in Bury St Edmunds, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with a refronting and extension that occurred in the mid-19th century. The exterior was restored in the early 1980s, along with the adjacent No.7. The building is timber-framed and faced in red brick, which was relaid in stretcher bond during the restoration. It has old plain tiles on the roof.
The house is two storeys tall with attics and consists of one bay. The first storey features a 16-pane sash window with plain reveals and a flat cement arch above it. The ground storey has a three-light, flat-roofed canted bay with large-paned sash windows, where the center window includes single vertical glazing bars. There is a flat-headed dormer covered in lead, which contains a two-light casement window. The entrance features a panelled door set in a plain surround, topped with a semicircular arched cement head, and there is a cement band running between the storeys just above the arch.
Internally, although it is connected to No.7, it is linked with No.5. The front ground-storey room has an exposed ceiling with heavy unchamfered joists and shows evidence of a former jetty. There is a blocked stair trap next to the shared stack, which has a rebuilt fireplace with a plain cambered lintel. The room above features a main beam that is chamfered with step stops. A 17th-century rear extension has exposed timbers in the upper walls and ceiling. The roofs have been renewed and have a shallow pitch on the rear slope.
