Description
Gramercy Cottage is a house located on Southgate Street in Bury St Edmunds. It dates back to the 16th century and underwent extensive restoration in the late 1960s, during which most of No. 148 was constructed to match the style of No. 149, and the rear part of No. 149 was completely replaced. The building features a timber frame with jettied upper storey, where the timbers are exposed, while the ground storey is mostly rendered except for the main posts. The roof is a mix of old and 20th-century plain tiles.
The exterior consists of two storeys, an attic, and a cellar. There are four 12-pane sash windows on the upper storey and three on the ground storey, all set in flush cased frames. The upper storey also has remnants of long original mullioned windows, which are partly blocked and have applied sills carved with a running leaf motif. A similar window has been added to the upper storey of No. 148. Across the front, there are five gabled dormers with 2-light single bar casement windows. The doorway for No. 148 is located at the southern end of No. 149, which features a recessed central six-panel entrance door.
Inside, the cellar is small and mostly modernized. Some timbering is exposed on the ground storey, but the original layout is unclear. The narrower central bay, now serving as the entrance hall and stair, was previously a chimney bay. Most of the timbers are plain, with flat unchamfered joists, but in the north end bay, the main beams have a double ogee moulding. On the upper storey, the cambered tie-beams are supported by long, substantial arched braces that show prominent assembly marks. All roof timbers were replaced during the restoration in the 1960s.
