Description
No. 146 on Southgate Street is a house that likely originated as a Wealden type structure, dating from the 15th century and later. The front was altered in the 19th century, and there are rear extensions added around 1970. The building is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a slate roof featuring a paired modillion eaves cornice.
The house has two storeys, with three windows on the first storey and two on the ground storey, all of which are 20th-century replacement sashes. A central 20th-century panelled door is set in plain reveals, topped by a blank semicircular fanlight.
Inside, there is a cellar with 19th-century flint and brick walling. The frame consists of two bays, with part of a third bay. On the left side, one bay was formerly jettied and contains the remains of two medieval service rooms. This area features a main beam with a removed stud partition, indications of two former doorways, and rough heavy wall-framing with joists. The associated open hall was replaced in the 17th century, and it is unclear how long it existed originally. The ceiling joists on the ground storey are set on edge, while no framing is exposed on the upper storey, and the roof timbers have been replaced.
