Description
Nos. 135, 136, and 137 on Southgate Street in Bury St Edmunds are a terrace of three houses built in the early 19th century, although they contain some earlier elements. The houses are timber-framed and have a roughcast rendered front, while the rear is constructed from flint with red brick dressings. The front slope of the roof is covered with old plain tiles, and the rear is finished with slates.
The buildings are two storeys high and include cellars. The front features three windows: two 16-pane sashes and one 12-pane sash on the upper storey, and three larger 12-pane sashes on the ground storey, all set in flush cased frames. There are three slightly recessed doors accessed by steps, each set in doorways with plain reveals, pilasters, and dentilled architraves beneath flat cornice hoods. Nos. 135 and 136 have four-panel doors with raised applied panels, while No. 137 has a six-panel door with sunk panels.
Inside, Nos. 135 and 136 have cellars with walls made of flint, brick, and stone, each featuring a re-used Norman stone column. During restoration of No. 136, internal timbers were uncovered, including several reused from the 16th century; the framing includes primary braces and bisected studs. The roofs are early 19th-century replacements with clasped purlins and a ridge-piece. No. 135 has a chamfered tie-beam in the south gable, but there are no signs of associated studding, and the front wallplate has been renewed.
