Description
19 and 20 Southgate Street is a house that has been divided into two properties. It dates from the later 17th century, featuring earlier fragments and an early 19th-century front. The building is timber-framed with a brick front and has a 20th-century concrete tiled roof. There is an internal chimney stack with a square brick shaft. The house has two storeys and a two-window range, with 16-pane windows on the ground floor that have segmental-arched heads, and 12-pane windows on the first floor. There are two 20th-century doors.
Inside, there is no cellar. Number 19 has only one main beam exposed on the ground floor and a corner stair. The front wall has been pushed forward, and the original rear wall has been removed. At the north end, a truss with a tie-beam and long arched braces, without studding, suggests that the building may have originally extended further north.
