Description
13 Southgate Street is a former beer house, known as The Jolly Toper Public House, located in Bury St Edmunds. The building features an early 19th-century front range and a 16th-century rear section. It is constructed with a timber frame, faced in red brick, and has render on the sides, topped with a slate roof that has a wide eaves soffit. The front range is three storeys tall, while the rear is two storeys. There are two window ranges, all featuring 16-pane sash windows in plain reveals, with the ground and first storey windows being deeper than those on the second storey. The entrance includes a six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, flanked by pilasters and topped with a flat cornice hood. Inside, there is no cellar. The timber-framed rear wing has heavy unchamfered joists and a blocked stair trap, and a partition wall has been removed. The roof timbers in this section have been renewed.
