Description
Number 24 on Southgate Street is a house dating from the 16th century. It has a timber-framed structure that is rendered and features a plaintiled roof. The building has an L-shaped plan with a two-storey gabled rear wing.
The exterior is two storeys high and jetties out over the street, supported by moulded console brackets. On the first storey, there are two 2-light small-paned casement windows, while the ground storey has three 20th-century 12-pane sash windows in flush cased frames. The entrance features a 20th-century six-panel door. At the rear, there is a flat-roofed two-storey block, which is built at the angle of the front range and the wing; this section has 19th-century brick on the ground storey and render above.
Inside, there is an infilled cellar. Both the front range and the rear wing date from the mid-16th century. The front range consists of two bays divided into two rooms, with main beams that have chamfer and scroll stops exposed, and a section of plain unchamfered joists. The upper storey features similar main beams. There is no evidence of original studding along the front wallplate, and a cambered and plastered tie-beam can be seen at the rear gable.
