Description

26, 28, and 29 Mustow Street is a row of cottages dating from the 18th century, now divided into three separate properties. The buildings are timber-framed, with some areas rendered, flint and stone, and parts refronted in brick. They feature a mansard roof covered with old plain tiles on the lower slope and pantiles on the upper slope. There are two internal chimney stacks with plain red brick shafts.

The exterior consists of two storeys and attics, with a four-window range that includes three small-paned, two-light casements and one 20th-century single-light window. The ground storey of Nos. 26 and 28 has two Edwardian three-light mullion-and-transom windows with heavy timber frames and cornices, while the upper storey is rendered. There are also two flat-headed dormers covered with lead, each containing two-light single bar casements. The ground storey features two 20th-century ledged and battened doors in plain segmental-arched surrounds. A stone panel on the ground storey wall of No. 28 shows the date 1777, and a plaque between the doors indicates that these two cottages were restored by Bury St Edmunds Town Trust in 1981.

No. 29 has a front made of painted brick, complete with a parapet and moulded cornice, and a brick band running between the storeys. The first storey has three windows: 12-pane sashes in plain reveals with flat arches. The ground storey includes a shop window flanked by doorways, with a 16-pane sash window to the left and a 12-pane sash window to the right, both set in a slightly lower section of the front. The interior has not been inspected.
