Description

15 Hatter Street is a house that has been converted into a restaurant with living accommodation above. The building features an early 19th-century front and has a core that dates back to the early 16th century. It is constructed with timber framing and roughcast, topped with a shallow pitched roof covered in 20th-century Roman tiles.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a cellar, with two windows on each storey. The first storey has 12-pane sash windows, while the top storey features 6-pane sash windows. The ground storey includes one shop window with plate glass and one 12-pane sash window, with a 20th-century recessed entry positioned between them.

Inside, the cellar walls are partly made of flint and large stone blocks. There are fragmentary remains of timber framing on the ground storey, arranged in two bays, which likely originally jutted out at the front. The main post of the rear wall is now free-standing on a small section of the original sill beam; this post is moulded along its sides, and a long shaft has been removed from the front, leaving behind a decorated capital with an empty mortice for a brace above it. On the first storey, two rooms have been combined, and the beams have been boxed in. The top storey is an early 19th-century addition, as are the extensions at the rear. The staircase features stick balusters, a curved and wreathed handrail, and bracketed treads.
