Description
9 Hatter Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and store. It dates from the 16th and 17th centuries and features a timber-framed structure with rendered walls and a plain tiled roof. The building is two storeys tall and has a cellar. It consists of a two-bay range that was originally jettied but is now underbuilt. The front has two windows with small-pane sashes in flush cased frames. The ground storey features a 20th-century shop front.
Inside, the ground storey has main cross-beams with a wide chamfer and cut-off stops. The end walls contain tie-beams with heavy arched braces, but there is no studding, suggesting that the frame was fitted between two existing buildings. There are extensions at the rear. The cellar has a stone rubble wall along the rear and includes an original fireplace with a timber lintel and the remains of a bake-oven on the north side wall.
