Description
78 High Street is a house that has been converted into a restaurant. It dates from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 18th century and late 20th century. The building features a timber frame with later brick infill, while the front is made of red brick in English bond, and the rear is rendered and tile hung. It stands three storeys tall and has two bays, along with a rear wing.
The restaurant front includes recessed small-pane windows and a central door set in a panelled reveal, which is flanked by fluted end pilasters and topped with a corniced frieze featuring end paterae. The windows have flat brick arches and late 20th-century sashes, with twelve panes on the first floor and eight panes above. There is a stepped band at the second floor and a coped parapet at the top. On the rear side, some timber framing with brick infill is visible at the eaves of the main range on the right. A late 20th-century conservatory addition is present but is not considered of special interest.
Inside, the front range displays square-panelled timber framing, and the rear mid-rail shows mortices in the soffit from former wooden window mullions. There is also a cambered tie-beam in the right-hand wall.
