Description

68 and 70 High Street is a former inn, known as the Little George Inn, now functioning as a shop. It dates from the 17th century and was refronted likely in the early to mid-18th century, with later alterations made in the 19th and late 20th centuries. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features tile-hanging, with some evidence of earlier timber-framing. It has a plain tile roof and stands three storeys tall with two bays; there is a two-storey bay on the left and later 20th-century extensions at the rear that are not of special interest. The shop front, added in the late 20th century, is also not of special interest.

The upper floors display a corniced platband at the second floor, along with giant end pilasters that have moulded capitals and triglyphs above. There is a dentilled cornice and a parapet made with blue header bricks, along with the end pilasters and cornice. The windows feature flat brick arches with moulded terracotta keystones; on the first floor, there are fixed 12-pane windows from the 20th century, while the second floor has older 12-pane sash windows with thick glazing bars and exposed sash boxes, flanked by the end of a tie rod. At the rear, there is a small gabled dormer. The left return of the building is tile-hung with a steeply-pitched gable. Inside, remnants of square-panelled timber framing can be seen, including a sole plate, posts, and mid-rail, along with carpenter's marks and stretcher-bond brickwork.
