Description

Nos 47 and 47A on High Street are commercial premises dating from around 1830, with some alterations. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and has a Welsh slate roof. It stands three storeys high and features two bays. The late 19th to early 20th century shop front includes a metal grille over the windows, which have 20th century glazing. The central door consists of two fielded panels, with the upper panel now glazed. There is a panelled pilaster on the left side, and on the right, a window curves around the corner. Twisted and scrolled iron brackets support a cornice above, which leads to a balcony with railings made of latticed ironwork and bands of circles at the top and bottom. On the first floor, there are two tall, unequally-hung, 15-pane sash windows with flat brick arches set at floor level for access to the balcony. The second floor features unequally-hung, 12-pane sash windows with projecting sills and cambered brick arches. The roof oversails, and there is a stack at the left end that is shared with no 45, which is now part of the same property. On the right return, there are stone brackets on the left at the first floor, likely once supporting a ledge for a former loading door. A plaque displaying the Skinners coat of arms is located on the right return wall of the single-storey rear addition.
