Description
Freeman Hardy and Willis is a commercial building located on the south side of Godalming High Street, dating from the 16th or 17th century, with alterations. The structure is timber-framed with brick infill and rendered at the front, featuring some tile-hanging, and has a plain tile roof. It stands two storeys high, with a three-bay section on the left and a one-bay wing to the rear left. The left-hand section has a wide, late 20th-century shop front with a deep fascia and no windows above. The added bay on the right includes an archway supported by a steel girder, with a brick first floor that has a sash window with glazing bars set in a flush wooden architrave. At the rear, the wing on the right is constructed of brick and tile-hung with a hipped roof, and some old brick is visible on the main range. Inside the archway, the right end of the left-hand section reveals timber-framing that includes a sole-plate, mid-rail, wall posts, an arched brace on the left, and later studs.
