Description

The boundary walls to St Nicholas and Chapel Cottage, which does not form part of this listing, are high walls that enclose the gardens of both properties. They extend around the corner of Hollow Road and Barton Road and are partly remnants of the medieval Hospital of St Nicholas that once occupied this site. The walls date from the 14th century in part, but most of the structure is a reconstruction from the 18th and 19th centuries. They are constructed from random flint with some red brick and stone mixed in. The section that appears to be original to the Hospital of St Nicholas features a buttressed stretch along Hollow Road, which includes a moulded stone base, stone facings on the end buttress, and stone jambs that outline a former large west window. At the corner of the walls, there is a three-light traceried stone window in the Decorated style, which was salvaged from the Hospital of St Petronilla in Southgate Street when it was demolished in the early 19th century. Additionally, various blocks of carved stone have been added to the top of the wall, particularly along the stretch facing Barton Road.
