Description
The Clare War Memorial was completed in 1921, designed by F J Lindley. It is made of Clipsham limestone with knapped flint detailing. The memorial features an octagonal stepped platform with a chamfered square plinth.
At the top, there is a finely carved wheel cross on a tapered shaft, which is set above the square plinth and the four-stepped octagonal platform, all enclosed by an iron railing fence. Beneath the cross, at the collar of the tapered shaft, is a carved crown detail. The first step of the platform has a dedication inscription in large Gothic lettering, highlighted by black knapped and galleted flint. The three upper steps are inscribed with the names of the fallen men and the dates '1914-1918' marking the conflict. The plinth transitions from an octagonal to a chamfered square shape, with each of its four faces adorned with different coats of arms representing Clare, the Suffolk Regiment, St Edmund, and St George. The memorial is prominently located in the center of Clare's historic Market Square. The iron railings surrounding the memorial are not included in the listing.
