Description
9 Market Hill is a late 16th to early 17th century timber-framed and plastered house, now faced in roughcast. It features double gables on the front that slightly project over a modillion cornice. The building has two storeys and attics; the upper storey was originally jettied but is now underbuilt with a 20th-century shopfront and is currently used as a petrol station. There are two window ranges with casement windows, and the attics are lit by casement windows in the gables. At the rear, there is a 16th-century timber-framed range that extends to the north, which was originally a separate house. The windows include double-hung sashes and casements with glazing bars. A 20th-century door is set within a 19th-century doorcase that has narrow pilasters and a cornice hood. The roof is tiled and features a diagonally set square chimney stack. All the listed buildings in Market Hill, along with those in Church Street, Station Road, and Well Lane, form a group.
