Description
The Bell Hotel is a timber-framed and plastered building that has always functioned as an inn. In the 16th century, it was known as the Green Dragon. A wing extends to the east at the rear, facing Cavendish Road. The building has undergone significant alterations in the 18th century and later, with renovations in the 20th century. The west front features sham timber-framing and the building is two storeys high with cellars. It has a five-window range on the Market Hill front and a three-window range on the Cavendish Road front, with double-hung sashes in flush cased frames, mostly with glazing bars. The doorways date from the 19th and 20th centuries, and the roof is tiled. Inside, the hotel boasts good ceilings with exposed moulded ceiling joists and a carved main beam adorned with folded-leaf ornamentation. The Bell Hotel is part of a group of listed buildings that includes those on Market Hill, Church Street, Station Road, and Well Lane.
