Description

The stable block located 20 yards west of Hengrave Hall, dating from the early to mid-16th century, originally served as lodgings for the Hengrave Hall Conference Centre. This two-storey building features a long range with various gabled projections, and the north end has undergone mid-20th century alterations and extensions. The structure is built with butt bricks, incorporating some red brick walling that may come from an earlier building. It has parapet gables adorned with stone ball finials and some stepped buttresses that reach up to the eaves. The roofs are plain tiled, complemented by 19th century red brick chimneys with diagonally-set square shafts.

The building includes some 16th century limestone hood-moulded and mullioned windows with two and three lights, some of which have leaded glazing. There are also 19th century timber casements and 20th century casements set under brick segmental arches. A two-storey west entrance porch features a 16th century first-floor window and a boarded entrance door with a rectangular fanlight.

At the north end, there is a laundry block built around 1900, which is a single storey with red brick walls and a plain tiled roof that has a central ridge. This block includes a ventilation louvre with a pyramid roof and a weathervane on top, as well as cruciform casements. The central open gabled entrance porch is set on a brick plinth and features turned balusters in the Elizabethan style.
