Description
The Thatched Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, featuring a lobby entrance plan. It underwent alterations and additions in the early 19th century in the Gothick style at the north end. The cottage is two storeys high with three windows and is constructed with timber framing, rendered with herringbone pargetting, and topped with a thatched roof. It has two- and three-light windows beneath square hood-moulds, with each light featuring an arched head and wrought iron diamond and hexagon panes. The entrance porch is gabled, adorned with carved bargeboards and a spike finial. The entrance door is panelled, decorated with nail-head ornamentation, and has an arched head with a square hood-mould. A plaque inscribed with "TRG" is also present. This cottage is a notable example of a building remodelled in the Gothick taste for Thomas Gage of Hengrave Hall.
