Description
Maulkins Cottages, now divided into two cottages, is a house dating from the late 15th century to early 16th century, with alterations made in the mid-20th century. The building is 1 and a half storeys high and has a three-cell plan, positioned sideways to the road. It features a timber frame with plaster on the north side, while the south and west sides are encased in 20th-century fletton brick. The roof is covered with 20th-century pantiles, laid over the original thatch, and the ends of the original rafters extend out along the north side. Inside, there is an internal chimney stack with two square detached shafts connected by later brickwork. The windows have been altered in the 20th century, and there is one large flat-headed dormer on the south side. Inside, a heavy main beam has been inserted across what was once an open hall, and there are remnants of a long hall window in the north wall.
