Description
Cottrell's is a house that has been converted into two estate cottages. It has a medieval core with alterations from the 16th century and later modifications. To the right, there is a mid-19th century addition, along with further work completed around 1980. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof, and consists of one and a half storeys in a two-cell layout. It features small-paned casement windows, two gabled dormers, and two glazed doors, most of which date from the mid-20th century. There is an internal stack, and the mid-19th century one-bay addition is constructed of rendered brick with a pantiled roof and stands two storeys tall. This addition includes original three-light casement windows set under segmental arches and louvred shutters, as well as a gable stack with two square shafts arranged diamondwise.
Inside, the building has partly exposed full-height studding, with two curved braces visible in the rear wall. The right cell contains wallposts with blocked mortices located about 0.5 meters below the current floor level. The left cell features a 16th-century ceiling with an axial bridging beam and plain joists set flat, along with an unusually large 16th-century open fireplace with its original lintel. The right cell has an 18th-century ceiling with on-edge joists and an open fireplace, which may date from the later 17th century. The roof is supported by common rafters, and the stairs to both cottages have been preserved.
