Description
Number 42 Lower Oakley is a house that was later converted into two cottages. It dates from the 16th century, with possible medieval origins, and has a later 17th-century addition on the left side that features a lower roof ridge. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof. It has one and a half storeys and a two-cell layout. There are three mid-20th-century two-light casement windows, two boarded doors, and two eyebrow dormers. An internal stack is present, along with a pantiled lean-to on the right. The timber frame remains intact, showcasing reversed braces, and plain joists are exposed in the ground floor rooms. The right-hand cell may belong to a different phase of construction, showing evidence of a hipped roof that could be medieval. The roof was replaced with softwood, likely in the 18th century.
