Description
The United Reformed Church, originally built as an Independent Chapel and formerly known as the Congregational Church, has a core dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. The interior was reconstructed in 1804, enlarged in 1869, and refronted. The building features render on the sides and rear, with a white brick front accented by stone dressings. The 20th-century tiled roofs are steeply pitched and hipped on the older section, with a gabled projection on the east that connects to the 19th-century front.
On the exterior, the south side has a two-storey range with three cross windows, all featuring diamond leaded panes. The east front showcases a Victorian early Perpendicular style, with a gabled nave at the center topped by a carved finial, and stepped and gabled buttresses. The sides have a plain parapet and a string course. A large four-light central window boasts curvilinear tracery and is flanked by two tiers of two-light windows in the aisles; the upper windows have arched heads and cusped tracery, while the lower ones are in a Tudor style with flat arches and hood-moulds. Below the central window is a wide entrance doorway with a four-centred arch, featuring moulded spandrels with circular trefoil cusping and a boarded double door with ornate wrought-iron hinges.
Inside, the church is galleried on all four sides, with moulded fronts and sunk panels, supported by cast-iron columns. At the west end, the organ is positioned at the back of the gallery, which is adorned with an upper arcade of three semicircular arches supported by square panelled columns, and decorative plasterwork in the intermediate spandrels. The central pulpit is accessible by stairs on each side.
