Description

These are a pair of cottages dating to the early 19th century, with evidence of medieval origins. They are constructed of gault brick, with a slate roof and a central red brick ridge stack. The rear wall features stone ashlar blocks in the lower section and includes a blocked, pointed-arched doorway. The cottages are two storeys high and have cellars.

The front elevation has a two-window range at the first floor, consisting of an original eight-over-eight unhorned sash window to the left and a renewed casement window to the right. The ground floor also has two original eight-over-eight unhorned sash windows. Fine gauged brick lintels are present on both floors. Cellar windows are partially visible. A six-panel door is located to the left (at number 30), accompanied by a fanlight with a round arched head. To the right (at number 31) is a further six-panel door with a boarded overlight, leading to a small yard and a rear entrance. An extension is located to the far right, with a ground floor of mixed flint and brick, and brickwork above. This extension has a six-over-six unhorned sash window to the first floor and a partly boarded sash with a four-panel door below. The right end of the cottages is stuccoed and features a two-light casement window over a door and window.

The rear of the cottages is defined by a red brick wall. This wall contains a six-over-six sash window and a two-light casement window. A plinth runs the full length of the wall, incorporating a blocked pointed-arched doorway, aligned with the front door of number 30, and large blocks of ashlar in the plinth and elsewhere on the lower part of the wall. The rear right corner of number 31 appears to mark the original corner of this plinth. Above the doorway, set into the wall, is a stone kneeler, likely associated with the coped gable end of an earlier building.

The interior of the cottages is largely unaltered and retains narrow staircases, each with a run of stick balustrading at the landing, terminating in a turned newel. Most doors are four-panelled, with original architraves. A small, early 19th-century fire surround is present in one room.

Historical records indicate that Warren's plan of Bury (1747) showed a chantry on the corner of College Lane and Whiting Street. During the 1960s, a three-light Norman window, featuring two column mullions, cushion capitals, and moulded bases, was discovered within the party wall of number 30 and the adjacent 15th-century building at number 63 Whiting Street (which forms a group with numbers 30 and 31). The survival of the ashlar blocks, plinth, and archway in the rear wall is significant, and suggests the potential for further remains from earlier periods.
