Description

67 Whiting Street is a house located in Bury St Edmunds, dating from the 16th and 18th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure rendered in roughcast panels and has a plaintiled roof with a modillion eaves cornice. The building is two storeys high with a cellar and an attic in the front range.

The exterior includes a two-window range with sashes that have a single vertical glazing bar in flush cased frames on each storey. There are two hipped dormers, each with 2-light 4-paned casement windows. The central entrance door is accessed by steps and has a Gibbs style surround with a triangular pediment above. The door itself is a six-panel design, with the top two panels glazed.

At the rear, there is an internal chimney-stack connecting the front to a two-storey rear wing. This wing features two 12-pane sash windows on the south side of the ground storey, which have heavy ovolo-moulded glazing bars in flush cased frames, and two older 2-light 4-pane casement windows on the first storey, along with an end chimney-stack.

Inside, the cellar is brick-lined with some stone blocks and remnants of an original timber ceiling. The front range is plain and dates from the early 18th century. The rear wing, originally divided into two heated rooms, has been converted into one space, revealing very heavy studding after the infilling between the studs in the partition wall was removed. One fireplace features a plain timber lintel, while the other has a bolection-moulded surround. On the upper storey, the main timbers are exposed, showing cambered tie-beams and rebates for shutters in both wallplates, with the roof covered. The front range has an attic roof with five bays, featuring clasped purlins and straight collars, though the rafters are covered.
