Description
No 48 on Bridewell Street is a late 15th century or early 16th century timber-framed and plastered house that stands at right angles to the street. The south side features exposed timber-framing. Originally, the upper storey jetted out over the north side, where remnants of brackets and decorated shafts can be found, now located inside a rear addition on the ground floor. The west end of the house is roughcast and includes 20th-century bay windows. The building has two storeys, with 20th-century casement windows. On the first storey, there are remains of original windows that have diamond mullions. Inside, the house boasts moulded beams and ceiling joists, along with a large open fireplace that has a lintel carved with a double row of battlemented ornamentation. The roof is tiled and features a large central chimney stack. This property is part of a group that includes Nos 30 to 34, 37 to 44, the Red Lion Inn, and Nos 46 to 48, as well as Nos 1 to 8 and Nos 13 to 15.
