Description

Numbers 37, 38, and 39 are a terrace of three houses located on King's Road in Bury St Edmunds, built in 1857-1858. They were designed by RM Phipson in partnership with G Morgan and were originally part of the barracks for the West Suffolk Militia Regiment. The houses are constructed from dark red brick with blue headers and lighter red brick dressings, featuring a hipped slate roof with a wide eaves soffit. The architectural style is Elizabethan, similar but plainer than the nearby houses at Nos 28 to 33 King's Road.

The exterior consists of two storeys with a total of 15 windows arranged in a pattern of 3:2:3:2:2:3. All windows are single-light casements with horizontal glazing bars set in slightly pointed brick surrounds with stone sills. Each house has high internal sawtooth chimney stacks topped with a row of tall terracotta pots. The rear of the houses features three paired ground and first-floor windows for each unit.

The interior has not been inspected. The low red brick boundary walls along the front have stone copings and higher dividing pillars topped with conical stone caps. Historically, the 1853 Militia Act mandated that each county provide accommodation for non-commissioned officers and a secure storage facility for arms, which these houses may have served. This unusual design is part of a group with the adjoining houses at Nos 28-33.
