Description
Gatehouse Cottage is a house dating from the mid or late 16th century. It has a two-cell end-chimney plan and is one storey high with attics. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the right-hand end. It has eyebrow casement dormers and an internal end chimney made of red brick from the 16th or 17th century. The cottage includes 20th-century casements with leaded lights and a 19th-century boarded entrance door at the cross-entry. The framing is substantial and fairly complete, with a clasped purlin roof, unchamfered floor joists, and arch-braced studwork. At the service end wall, the half-hipped roof rests on base crucks, allowing for a window to be placed under the eaves. The single service room is separated from the hall by a screen that has a wide chamfered central opening.
