Description
Whitegate Farmhouse is a farmhouse that was built in two stages, in the 16th century and early 17th century, with significant alterations made in the mid-19th century. The building features a three-cell cross-passage entrance plan and stands two storeys high. It is timber-framed, with the front elevation encased in mid-19th century red brick, while the other walls are pebble-dashed. The roof is slated and dates from the 19th century, adorned with carved bargeboards. There is a 17th-century axial chimney that has been plastered and recapped in red brick, along with a 19th-century external red brick chimney on the left side.
The farmhouse has 19th-century small-pane sash windows and a pair of French windows leading to the parlour. The entrance door, located at the cross-passage, is a four-panelled design from the 19th century. Inside, the timber-framing is prominently displayed, with the 16th-century hall and service cells featuring arch wind-braced studding, while the 17th-century parlour block has slender but closely spaced studding. Other notable 17th-century features include main beams that are ovolo-moulded with leaf stops, a chimney between the hall and parlour with an original arched and ovolo-moulded chamber fireplace, several well-crafted plank doors, and inserted attics throughout. Additionally, there is an 18th-century parlour corner cupboard with fretted shelves. A rear wing, which includes a dairy and backhouse with a cheeseroom and granary above, was added in the 19th century.
