Description

Birch Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century. It is timber-framed and plastered, featuring a thatched roof with end chimneys; the south end chimney is scratch-dated 1746, while the other is from the 19th century. The cottage has a two-cell end-chimney plan and stands two storeys high. It includes small-pane casements from the 19th and 20th centuries and a boarded entrance door. The framing is well-exposed throughout the building. The first floor structure was remodeled and partly raised in the 18th century, with most joists renewed. The roof is a complete wind-braced clasped-purlin type, and there is arch-braced studwork present.
