Description
Spring Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with a likely core from the 16th century. It has two storeys and a three-cell plan. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring large areas of early or original roughcast plaster. The roof is thatched and includes a central 17th-century chimney made of red brick. The windows consist of 19th and 20th-century small-pane casements, along with several diamond mullioned windows from around 1600, which were once unglazed. The entrance door, from the 20th century, is boarded and battened, topped with a thatched canopy. The framing is fully exposed and unmoulded, with 17th-century on-edge floor joists, although other features indicate alterations from the 16th century. There is some evidence of an original timber-framed chimney; the current 17th-century chimney situated between the hall and parlour has back-to-back fireplaces, the parlour side featuring an elliptical arched head. In the hall, at one end, there are 17th-century plaster roses set into the wall at a high level.
