Description

Pear Tree Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the late 14th century or early 15th century, with a parlour block added to the left in the late 16th century. The building has one storey and attics, featuring a three-cell plan with a lobby entrance that has been present since the late 16th century. It is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof that includes 19th-century gabled thatched dormers and an axial chimney made of red brick with a rebuilt 20th-century shaft. The windows are small-pane casements from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The structure is a three-cell open-hall house, with the two-bay hall featuring a cambered tie-beam supported by massive unchamfered arch-braces that have a two-centred curvature. The studding is widely spaced and lacks visible wind-bracing. There is a blocked two-centred arched entrance doorway and tall blocked hall windows at both the front and rear, with the rear windows retaining square mullions above the transom. The roof is constructed with coupled rafters.

Both end cells have undergone significant alterations in the 16th and 17th centuries, although one original window remains intact with square mullions. In the late 16th century, the hall was floored over and the service end partition was removed. The late 16th-century parlour block features good framing that is unmoulded, with closely spaced studding and diamond-mullioned windows, and a clasped-purlin roof.
