Description

The Church of St Mary is a medieval parish church that has undergone restorations in 1848 and 1883. It features a nave, chancel, a south-west tower/porch, and a vestry located to the north of the chancel. The building is constructed from flint rubble with freestone dressings, and the chancel has a parapet gable covered with machine-made plain tiles, while the nave has concrete plain tiles. The east end of the nave shows long-and-short quoining, possibly dating from the 10th or 11th century. The plain round-arched north doorway and a nearby slit window may also be from this period. The late 14th or early 15th century tower includes a moulded doorway and an ogee-headed niche above, with the inner doorway retaining its original plank door. The tower's parapets feature flushwork panelling and pinnacles. A restored west window from the mid-14th century showcases net-tracery. A plaque on the north external wall indicates that the vestry and chancel were rebuilt in 1848; the vestry incorporates a Y-traceried 14th-century window, with medieval rubble walling still visible at the base. The chancel, styled around 1300, may have been entirely rebuilt. The nave roof, dating from around 1500 or the early 16th century, consists of five bays with simple moulded hammerbeam trusses, arch-braced collars, and short kingposts. At the base of the tower, there is an iron-bound door. Additionally, five panels with painted tracery from a 15th-century rood screen are displayed on the chancel wall, and there is an arcaded oak pulpit from around 1620, which was almost reconstructed in 1883.
