Description
Hall Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century, likely with a medieval core. It has a two-cell plan with a cross-passage entry and is one storey high with attics. The building is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the left-hand end, featuring one eyebrow casement dormer. There is an axial chimney made of red brick from the 16th or 17th century. The windows are 19th-century casements, and the entrance door is a boarded door from the 19th century. At the time of the survey, very little of the framing was exposed, with only a section of smoke-encrusted wall-plate visible. A central open truss has been completely removed, and there is other evidence indicating that this was originally an open hall house that has been altered. A large single-flue chimney has been inserted, backing onto the former cross-passage, and later, the partition for the service cell was removed, allowing for an additional flue to be added.
