Description
Church Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century, with a lower range that may be from the 16th or 17th century. It was remodeled in 1984, as indicated by a plaster date on the gable. The building has two storeys and a single storey with attics. It is timber-framed and plastered, featuring mid-20th century pargetting in panels. The roofs are covered with plain tiles and have 16th or 17th century chimneys made of red brick. The windows are 20th century casements, with a tall 20th century staircase window in a dormer. There are two exposed and glazed 16th century diamond-mullioned windows. The entrance on the left has a boarded door from the 18th or 19th century, while a 20th century plank door is located to the right. The left-hand range consists of late 16th century hall and parlour cells, featuring a massive axial chimney. The framing members in this range are reused from an early 16th century open hall house that had bricknogged walling. The right-hand range has been altered but may contain an earlier core. It includes an open fireplace with a notable mid-16th century lintel that is cambered and has an arched soffit. The cottage is associated with a possibly manorial empty moated site adjacent to the parish church.
