Description
Sparrows Hall is a house dating from the late 16th century. It has one storey and attics, featuring a timber-framed and plastered structure. The hipped thatched roof is complemented by a red brick chimney from the 18th or early 19th century. There is a long mid-20th century eyebrow casement dormer, along with mid-20th century casements and a gabled thatched entrance porch that has a half-glazed panelled door. The upper level displays complete studwork with arch wind-bracing at the corners. Inside, there is a complete wind-braced clasped-purlin roof with light smoke staining visible in the hall. The service cell has heavy unchamfered floor joists, while those in the hall have been restored in the 20th century. Despite the mid-20th century alterations, Sparrows Hall is included for being an unusually late example of an open-hall house, with the upper part remaining quite complete. It is a rare example of a rural two-cell open-hall house.
