Description
Wood Farmhouse is a 15th-century farmhouse with significant alterations in the early 17th century. It is a one-and-a-half-story building with attics and originally comprised three rooms, later converted to a lobby-entrance layout in the 17th century. The house has a timber frame, plastered walls, and some 19th-century herringbone pargeting. It is roofed with thatch, and features a red brick axial chimney with a sawtooth shaft and a large 19th-century eyebrow dormer. The windows are early 19th-century small-pane casements with Gothick hoodmoulds. A flat-roofed 19th-century entrance porch has a four-panelled door flanked by simple pilasters and a cornice. A two-bay, two-story service wing with a pantiled roof is located at the rear.
The original core of the house is a small, open hall with an almost entirely removed open truss, retaining evidence of long arch braces rising from pilasters. A blocked two-centred arched cross-entry doorway is present. The service room doorways are chamfered but unusual for the period in lacking arches. The timber framing has widely-spaced studs and convex arched wind bracing at the corners. The service rooms include heavy, rough joists. The roof is said to retain traces of smoke-blackening and is likely of coupled-rafter form. An original circular open hearth, with radially-set bricks laid on their edges, is preserved beneath the floor. In the early 17th century, the parlor cell was rebuilt larger, and a fireplace with a cambered lintel was installed in the hall, along with an inserted upper floor, all dating to the late 16th or early 17th century.
