Description
Guildhall Cottages are a pair of cottages dating from around 1700. They are timber-framed and plastered, featuring a concrete-tiled roof that was originally plain-tiled, along with axial chimneys made of red brick. The cottages are two storeys high and mainly have 19th-century small-pane casements. The entrance doors are boarded and from the 19th century, with 20th-century open porches supported by posts. There are 18th or 19th-century slated lean-to outshuts at the side and rear. The timber framing is notable for its date, exhibiting primary-braced close-studding and on-edge floor joists. Many of the building components have been reused and re-cut from a 16th-century, or possibly 15th-century, structure that previously occupied this site, which featured heavy framing. According to White's Directory from 1855, this earlier building was referred to as the guildhall, which was settled in 1476 for the benefit of the parishioners and is now the schoolhouse.
