Description
The Earl Stonham War Memorial is a war memorial unveiled in 1921, located in the churchyard of St Mary’s in Earl Stonham, Suffolk.
The memorial features a marble cross that stands atop a column made of Portland stone, which is set on a granite base. It has an octagonal shape and is positioned on a square base, surrounded by a low chain and metal-post railing.
The design includes an ornately carved Latin cross resting on a finial, which consists of a miniature stepped base atop the capital of a slim octagonal column with a moulded base. The column itself is supported by an octagonal base featuring two tall steps and a small half step in between. Inscriptions are incised on the panels of the steps. The upper step reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF EARL STONHAM/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The names of the 15 fallen from the First World War are listed on the lower step. Additionally, the inscription "SO THEY PASSED OVER AND LET THE TRUMPET SOUND ON THE OTHER SIDE" is found below. The name of the fallen from the Second World War is incised on the upper western step, below the date 1939-1945.
