Description
Nos 75 and 76 on Ipswich Road are a pair of cottages that were originally built as a single three-cell open hall house around 1530 to 1550. The cottages are two storeys high, constructed with a timber frame and roughcast exterior. They feature a pantiled roof with a central 19th-century red brick chimney and an additional chimney at the left gable. The windows are three-light casements dating from around 1900, with those on the first storey adorned with pantiled gablets and serpentine bargeboards. There are three boarded and battened entrance doors from the same period, reflecting the time when the house was divided into three separate dwellings. To the left, there is a 19th-century lean-to extension with a pantiled roof.
Internally, the mid-16th-century framing is exposed, showcasing a typical late form of open hall house. The two-bay hall contains blocked windows with square mullions, and a similar window can be found in one of the chambers. The structure features arch windbraced studding and a nearly complete coupled rafter roof, which is blackened throughout. The original hipped ends have been enclosed within 19th-century gables. There is also evidence of a 17th-century chimney that was inserted into the cross entry on the left but has since been removed.
