Description

HELMINGHAM IPSWICH ROAD TM 15 NE 4/93 Nos 75 and 76

  • II

Pair of cottages: built as one 3-cell open hall house c.1530-1550. Two storeys. Timber framed and roughcast. Pantiled roof with axial C19 chimney of red brick; another at left hand gable. 3-light casements of c.1900; those at 1st storey have pantiled gablets with serpentine bargeboards. Three boarded and battened entrance doors of c.1900 (at this point the house consisted of three dwellings). A pantiled C19 lean-to extension to left. Unmoulded mid C16 framing exposed internally. A typical late form of open hall house. The two-bay hall has blocked windows with square mullions; a similar window is in one chamber. Arch windbraced studding. Near-complete coupled rafter roof, blackened from end to end (the hipped original ends are enclosed within C19 gables). Evidence for a C17 chimney inserted into the cross entry (to left), but later removed.
