Description
The revetment to the outer bank of the moat surrounding Helmingham Hall, along with two attached bridges, dates from around 1760. Each section of the revetment is approximately 50 meters long and constructed of red brick. On the north, east, and west sides, the walling rises about 0.5 meters above the water level and features a sawtooth band beneath a gabled coping. Part of the east arm has walling that is 1 meter high. On the south side, the wall rises to about 2.5 meters above the water level and has semi-circular brick copings laid on edge.
At each corner of the revetment, there is an obelisk atop a square pier. In the center of the south side, there is a bridge made of cast iron, designed by John Nash in the Gothick style around 1800. The bridge features octagonal brick piers that rise from the moat to support the main span. The elliptical arch beneath the bridge has open arched infill in the spandrels, and the sides of the platform are adorned with a quatrefoil frieze and open arcaded balustrading. A short span connects the bridge to the south bank, while the drawbridge serves as the only link to the main gatehouse located 2 meters to the north. A second nearly identical bridge spans the east arm of the moat near the north end, with its terminal piers on the east bank also being octagonal and designed by Nash.
