Description

The Front Lodge and screen wall to the right is a lodge cottage, part of a pair located at the entrance to the southeast approach of Helmingham Hall, known as Oak Walk. It was likely built around 1841 by Anthony Salvin in the Tudor style. The lodge is constructed of red brick featuring a diaper pattern in black headers. It has octagonal corner buttresses made of red brick and a continuous moulded limestone cornice at the base of the parapet. At the top of each buttress, there are circular shafts made of carved brick topped with terracotta onion finials that match those at the corners. The roofs are covered with plain tiles, and there are two red brick chimneys with octagonal bases and circular flues made of carved brick. The building has one storey and attics, with two large bay windows that have stone mullions and transoms, embattled parapets, and leaded lights. Each gable features a similar two-light window that illuminates the attic. To the right of the lodge, there is a 5-meter length of screen wall made of red brick, which is embattled and has moulded copings of red brick.
