Description
The entrance gateway and piers to Helmingham Park, located between the front lodges to Oak Walk, were constructed around 1900 in the style of the early 18th century. The gates, dating from the 18th or early 19th century, were brought from the Tollemache family seat at Ham House in Richmond Park around the same time. The heavy square gatepiers stand about 5 meters high and feature moulded limestone bases and cornices, with the piers made of very finely gauged red brickwork. Each pier is topped with the Tollemache emblem, a black winged horse's head. The wrought iron gates include side panels and a scrolled crown. On either side of the piers, there are spearhead railings in sections, which are supported by octagonal red brick piers with limestone finials.
