Description

Hawkstone Lodge is an entrance lodge built around 1853-1854, with some minor later additions and alterations. It is made of red brick with sandstone ashlar dressings, corner panels, and a moulded plinth. The roof is covered with machine tiles and features ornamental cresting, as well as elaborately decorated cusped bargeboards with pointed finials and pendants. The lodge has a T-plan layout, with a long range at the rear and a two-storey porch at the front, creating a cruciform shape in a Victorian Tudor style.

The building stands two storeys high with an attic. On the entrance side, there are three-light cusped stone mullion windows with moulded dripstones, and similar two-light windows on the first floor to the left and right of the central two-storey porch. Small cusped windows are located just below the eaves, each with gables above. The porch features a four-centred outer arch with one order of shafts and quatrefoil decoration in the spandrels, along with a half-glazed door that has Gothic tracery. Above the porch is a crenellated oriel window, and there are similar oriel windows on the first floor of the gable ends, each with plain shield decoration on the cills.

A prominent central red brick ridge stack is topped with four attached octagonal stone shafts that have moulded capping and blind Gothic tracery at their bases. The rear range has similar windows to the front and a central ridge stack with two octagonal shafts. Hawkstone Lodge was constructed when a drive was created to connect Weston with Hawkstone Hall in 1853-1854.
