Description
Belfry Cottage and Belfry Lodge, located in Weston-under-Redcastle, are mid- to late 19th century buildings that were originally a school, now divided into two dwellings. The structure features a planted timber frame with rendered infill set on a painted sandstone plinth, topped with a machine tile roof that has pointed wooden finials on the gables. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with a shorter red brick range at the rear on the left, which runs parallel to the main structure. It is one storey high with a gable-lit attic.
The timber framing consists of small rectangular panels, with four panels extending from the cill to the wall-plate, and a repeated pattern of three quatrefoils above the ground-floor windows. The gable ends are adorned with carved corner brackets and curved struts supporting the collars. The building features three-light mullioned and transomed wooden oriel windows with leaded lights above the transom, positioned to the left and right of an open central gabled porch. This porch has a nail-studded panelled door with a Tudor-arched head. Similar windows are found on the ground floor of the gable ends, while the first floor has plainer, flatter oriels.
At the center of the ridge, a square lantern with a pyramidal cap houses a bell. The red brick range at the rear includes a brick ridge stack with paired octagonal shafts and plain moulded stone capping. The buildings are included for their group value.
