Description
Hawkstone Park Hotel is an inn that has been converted into a hotel, originally built around 1790 for Sir Richard Hill. The building features rendered brick and a hipped slate roof with ridge and end stacks. The original main block consists of two sections with three bays, creating a slight pedimented break in the center, flanked by service wings. There have been extensive additions and alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries, including a prominent flat-roofed two-storey projection with seven bays added to the front of the main block. The hotel stands three storeys tall, with two-storey service wings. The second floor of the main block has glazing bar sash windows, and above the center window is the Hill family coat-of-arms. The service wings each have a Venetian window on the ground floor and a Diocletian window on the first floor; however, the Venetian window on the right wing has been damaged, and the one on the left wing was removed when the 20th-century addition was built.
Inside, the hotel has undergone significant alterations in the late 20th century but still retains part of a late 18th-century staircase, although several balusters have been replaced. The ceiling friezes from the 19th-century additions are mostly hidden by late 20th-century polystyrene tiles. Approximately 80 meters to the east of the main front are re-set late 18th-century gate piers, although the entablature has been dismantled and removed to the side of the road; these piers are not included in the listing. Despite the considerable alterations, particularly in the late 20th century, the hotel holds historical significance as it was built to accommodate early visitors to Hawkstone Park. The 20th-century additions are not of special architectural interest.
